What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that creates the appearance of fuller hair through the application of natural pigments to the scalp. Often referred to as a “hair tattoo,” SMP is a highly advanced technique that uses specialized equipment to replicate the look of natural hair follicles.

SMP is ideal for individuals experiencing hair loss due to male pattern baldness, thinning hair, alopecia, or scarring from hair transplants or injury. The treatment can recreate a sharp buzz-cut look, add density to thinning areas, or restore a natural-looking hairline.

Unlike traditional tattoos, SMP uses pigments designed to match your natural hair color and skin tone. The results are subtle, realistic, and long-lasting. Most clients require 2–3 sessions to build the perfect shade and blend.

Scalp Micropigmentation is low maintenance, with no downtime, surgery, or medications involved. It offers an immediate confidence boost and can transform the way you look and feel.

Whether you’re looking to restore your hairline or simply enhance the appearance of thicker hair, SMP provides a clean, sharp, and professional look that lasts for years.

Head Revive® Scalp Micropigmentation Hairline Design Guide

Hairline design is the foundation of a successful scalp micropigmentation (SMP) treatment. At Head Revive®, our approach is tailored, artistic, and medically precise — because a flawless finish begins with the perfect frame.

This guide outlines the most popular SMP hairline styles, who they suit best, and how we customize every hairline based on face shape, lifestyle, and goals.

Natural / Broken Hairline

Look: Slightly uneven, organic edge — no harsh lines

Best for: Most clients; ideal for subtle, realistic results

Face Shapes: All, especially oval or round

Features: Scatter-dot technique; irregular soft edges; realistic blending

Why it works: Mimics natural hair growth and aging

Defined / Hard Hairline

Look: Sharp, straight, highly groomed

Best for: Younger men or clients seeking a bold, barbershop finish

Face Shapes: Square or angular faces

Features: Dense frontal zone, ultra-clean edge, crisp temples

Why it works: May need maintenance to retain crispness

Receded / Mature Hairline

Look: Slightly higher with gentle temple recession

Best for: Older clients or those wanting age-appropriate realism

Face Shapes:  All, especially mature features

Features: Subtle curve, conservative placement

Why it works: Avoids “overdone” look, ages naturally over time

Widow’s Peak

Look: Central V-point in the forehead

Best for: Clients with natural widow’s peak pattern

Face Shapes: Often oval or heart-shaped

Features: Precision required; often blended with broken style

Why it works: Preserves natural features for authentic results

Soft Rounded Hairline (Feminine Density Focus)

Look: Gentle, curved front with no corners

Best for: Women with thinning hair or receding frontal density

Face Shapes: All, especially softer or oval faces

Features: Low-density dot pattern; natural flow into mid-scalp

Why it works:

Enhances volume without harsh lines; ideal for women

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Facial Symmetry: Align to natural bone structure, not trends

Client Age & Style: Conservative for older clients; stylized for younger or bold personalities

Skin & Hair Type: Oily skin needs softer blending; coarse hair can tolerate bolder patterns

Ethnic Background: Tailor density and shape for authenticity (e.g. Afro-textured, Asian, Caucasian)

Scar Camouflage

SMP expertly conceals scalp scars from injury or hair transplants by blending pigments into the surrounding hair. The result? A smooth, natural look that minimizes the appearance of scarring. Restore your confidence with a seamless, undetectable finish tailored to your skin and hair tone.

FAQS

The world's fastest growing remedy for hair loss, scalp micropigmentation is a cover-up for baldness in men, thinning hair in women, and a camouflage for scars and alopecia. When performed correctly by a skilled and experienced artist, scalp micropigmentation is virtually undetectable.

Scalp micropigmentation is the application of thousands of micro-dots to the scalp. Each micro-dot is a deposit of specialized pigment, designed to replicate the appearance of a shaven hair follicle.

For men who are happy to shave their hair - SMP creates the illusion of a full head of shaven hair.
For men and women who prefer to keep their hair longer - SMP reduces the color contrast between the hair and scalp to make hair loss much less noticeable.
For people with scars - SMP blends the scar with the surrounding hair to drastically reduce its visibility, often by as much as 90%.
For those with alopecia - SMP is adapted to meet your specific and changing needs. Ultimately the outcome is to hide your hair loss to the greatest extent possible. In most cases, alopecia can be completely hidden.

The short answer is that you are almost certainly a suitable candidate for SMP, however there are a few circumstances that would stop you being a good candidate, known in the industry as "contraindications". The circumstances upon which SMP would not be a suitable solution are as follows:

You have had hair transplant surgery in the last 12 months, and SMP would be required in either the donor or recipient areas of your scalp.
You have skin damage caused by hair system adhesives, or a hair system has caused your skin to be in a poor condition or a different color to the surrounding skin.
You are undergoing chemotherapy, or any medical treatment that prevents you from having tattoos.
You have used retinol products within the last 3 months.
You have had laser tattoo removal within the last 3 months.
You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You are taking medication that thins the blood.
You are likely to experience an allergic reaction to the SMP pigments. If you suspect this may be the case, we can perform a patch test.
You have a specific skin condition such as Seborrheic Dermatitis or Lichen Planus. These conditions do not necessarily rule out SMP, but you should only choose an experienced artist and consult a dermatologist prior to treatment. SMP can usually proceed during periods when your skin condition is less aggressive.
You have sunburn on your scalp.
You have received a poor quality procedure in the past that requires full removal.

The average scalp micropigmentation procedure requires 3 treatment sessions, each taking 2-3 hours to complete.

Clients with scars, alopecia, fair skin or more complex requirements may require more or longer sessions.

Scalp micropigmentation is  a permanent procedure. Once completed, the pigments will not go away unless removed by laser, saline or a similar method.

That said, the pigments do fade slowly over time and require top-ups every 3-6 years on average.

It is important to avoid over-doing your procedure or having too many top-ups. The scalp can only hold so much pigment, and an over-saturated scalp looks blocky and unnatural, leading to an unwelcome helmet-like appearance.

Seasoned SMP artists know this, and we aim to achieve your desired result with as little pigment as possible.

Less pigment also makes top-ups easier, however it is still important to leave it as long as possible until a top-up is genuinely required.
